PROJECT RELEVANCE AND CONTEXT

The overall aim of the project is to improve the effectiveness of the conservation management of the Montagu’s Harrier and to increase the awareness of the species in key stakeholder groups. Montagu's harrier is a kind of raptor species which nest on the ground in the agricultural land. It belongs to the most endangered bird of prey in Europe. Conservation embraces appropriate management of habitats and especially nest protection during agricultural work in fields. The main danger for harriers is the harvesting of fields. In the case of late localization of the nest, harrier nest with youngs can be destroyed. Population in the V4 region is estimated on 3000-4705 pairs. However, important part nest in Poland. Populations in Slovakia and Hungary are endangered by sooner mowing of crops in the fields. Each country has the main problem with stabilization of nest success. This issue is in relationship to the number of volunteers who searching for nests, financing of conservation measures and the will to collaborate with farmers. The main goal of the project is to improve nest success in the V4 region, exploring new potential areas with harrier population and exchanging best practice in the conservation work. Within the previous project “People for harriers in CZ-SK region” we realized auxiliary activities which outputs will help us in the proposed project. In this project, we would like to continue in our mission and improvement of harrier conservation.

Event „International Conference “Research and conservation of the Montagu's Harrier in Europe”

Due to the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Conference: “Research and conservation of the Montagu's Harrier in Europe” was organized on 21/11/2020 online on the zoom platform. For the purposes of the conference, a thematic website was created at http://pygargus.pl/conference (pdf attached), where the registration form, conference program and information about the project, conference organizers and the project sponsor were placed.
